Balustrade Repair Update
Local drivers will be aware of damage caused to the balustrade last year when a car went out of control while crossing the bridge. A temporary repair has now been in place for several months. The council has been in touch with the NYCC Project Engineer for Thornton Bridge asking for an update on work to date and progress towards a full reinstatement of the balustrade. Below is his reply.
“The recovery of the two sections of balustrade from the river was undertaken by divers, through our Bridges Department. One of the sections is irreparable. The other section has some damage, but it may be possible that this could be repaired or used as a mould for the casting of the replacement sections.
When the repairs are undertaken, the bridge will need to be closed and at present I am unable to say when this is likely to happen.
We are presently in discussion with the contractor who carried out the most recent repairs to Thornton Bridge with regards to the necessary balustrade repairs. We are also in contact with the district council to ensure that the proposed repairs meet the required planning regulations. Once we know when the repairs are likely to happen, we will let you know in due course.”
